Water Management
The water management element of the Fullness of Life programme will address the following United Nations Millennium Goals (UNMDG) by achieving the targets set by the United Nations. Progress towards the UNMDG will be measured against the United Nation’s own indicators as listed.
UNMDG: Reduce child mortality
Target: reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under five mortality rate.
Indicators
(a) Reduction in under-five mortality rate
(b) Reduction in infant mortality rate
UNMDG: Ensure environmental sustainability
Target: Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation.
Indicators
(a) Increase in the proportion of the population using and improved drinking
(b) Increase in the proportion of the population using an improved sanitation facility
Water is a basic requirement for a sustainable way of life in any country. The developing world can be particularly vulnerable to the vagaries of unpredictable rainfall and, therefore, water availability. The principles of rain harvesting are both well known and reasonably widely practised. The Fullness of Life programme will ensure that rain harvesting is fully implemented and utilised. And water storage facilities will be created to provide year-round availability of water for personal consumption, crop production, animal welfare and all other aspects of rural life. Existing systems of rain harvesting will, wherever suitable, be used to avoid any delay in implementation.
Rain harvesting will be utilised at the community hub, and a system will be developed to allow for rain harvesting at domestic dwellings as well as at any commercial properties within the supported area.
When available, water can create as many problems as when it is absent and this is due to impurity. So water purification will be a part of the Fullness of Life programme, with the intention to explore natural methods of purification.
Better access to improved sanitation will also be provided. Initially a survey will determine current provision, desired improvements and the methods by which this may be achieved.
Start-up needs include: Guttering, downpipes, water tanks, corrugated sheeting.
